Avatar: The Last Airbender is a television series that aired on Nickelodeon from 2006 to 2009. The show spanned for three seasons with a total of 61 episodes in its short run of three years. The show from then on garnered a worldwide fan base and was extremely successful. It boasts an IMDb rating of 9.2, which is a testament to its superiority and exceptionality. It takes the viewers to the make-believe world where people can bend elements, namely – Air, Water, Fire, and Earth with Avatar, the main protagonist being the only exception who can bend all four. The show was so successful that it inspired video games, comics, books, and a movie that was dubbed by the critics as one of the worst movies of all time.

Even after 11 years after the show stopped airing it is still fresh in the memories of its worldwide fan base.  So, it’s obvious when it started streaming online, that it created a storm. If social media is anything to go by, almost everyone is streaming the show. The show’s fame has hardly been hit by a decade of absence. It is enjoying a very high viewership on Netflix since it started streaming there in May. It is more popular than almost all other shows on the streaming site and still enjoys every growing viewership. The cult following of the show is still expanding and adding new fanatical fans every day.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has been a top 10 in its two months Netflix run which goes on to prove its popularity and the ever-growing cult following. It is expected to be a very highly viewed show in the coming days as well and won’t be a surprise if it becomes the most viewed show on the platform. It remains to be seen how long it is able to sustain its place in top 10 as it has already made many records in its two months-long run.

The only fly in the ointment was the streaming quality which was disappointing a lot of fans. But in a tweet of 22nd July 2020, it was officially announced that the show will now be streamed in HD. The tweet said, “Avatar: The Last Airbender is now available in HD so if you want to see every glorious fiber of Appa’s fur, now is the time. And if you haven’t watched Avatar yet, what are you doing? Why are you like this?”

The fans had been stoked ever since they got to know about it and already planning to re-watch it even though they have just binge-watched it recently.

Although it’s still uncertain why the show was not streamed in HD, to begin with, there were speculations that it might have something to do with shows’ age as it is a decade old. But, even before the HD upgrade, the show enjoyed a place in most-watched shows even though the viewers were seemingly put off by the poor video quality. But now that we have Avatar in HD it seems it is going to break all records. The fans are already speculating re-watching who had streamed at any time in the last two months.

The show was available once earlier on Netflix, before being reinstated at the end of May this year. While Amazon Prime Video also streamed it for a short span. The Netflix HD upgrade of the show has got the fans all excited once again as the video quality has a significant improvement. The show’s massive cult fan following is sure to bring huge viewership for Netflix with the HD upgrade.

Avatar has been a huge success even in the first decade of the century when it was televised some 14 odd years back. It has only grown in stature. Netflix has made the right bet by giving it a platform. The show’s exceptionality has already made it a huge success on the platform and with the HD upgrade, it is sure to grow and leap new heights. To remain in the top 10 most-watched shows for two months straight for a show that is a decade old is beyond imagination and an achievement in itself. But Avatar with its great story has managed to do the seemingly impossible. What remains to be seen is how long will Avatar continue its successful run and grow in fans, only time will tell.

So, what are you waiting for? Go to Netflix and watch one of the most successful shows ever made. You won’t regret it.
